How To Select Right Tube Bender For HVAC Copper Tubing

Bent copper lines are everywhere in HVAC — from condenser connections to routed refrigeration runs. The right tube bender protects the tube wall, holds the bend radius, and prevents the kinks that restrict flow and invite leaks. Tube Bender Types In The TORCHMARK Range

Bend Radius Matters

The bend radius is the centerline radius of the curve. Too tight a radius flattens the tube wall and narrows the bore; too wide wastes space. HVAC copper has a practical minimum bend radius tied to its outside diameter, and a heavy-duty former holds that radius repeatably while a free-hand spring bend can drift.

Rule of thumb for buyers: stock formers whose marked radius matches the tubing you sell, and train users to never under-bend below the tube’s rated minimum.

Inch vs Metric Copper

As with flaring, the tubing standard divides markets:

  • Inch: ¼", ⅛", ½", ⅛", ¾" — common in North America, Gulf and many import markets.

  • Metric: 6, 8, 10, 12, 16 mm — common across Asia and Europe.

Manual vs Hydraulic

  3. Mixing standards — stocking only inch formers for a metric market (or vice versa).

  4. No heavy-duty option — service techs buy cheap spring benders, then struggle on larger runs.
